Frequently Asked Questions

Retail Competition and Open Access, or RCOA, was created as a mandate of the Electric Power Industry Reform Act of 2001 (EPIRA) that allows eligible electricity consumers to select from a wide range of Retail Electricity Suppliers (RES) rather than just from their area distribution utility.
A Retail Electricity Supplier, or RES, is a licensed company that supplies electricity to eligible businesses under the Retail Competition and Open Access (RCOA) program. Qualified customers can choose a RES like JNEC for their electricity supply.
JNEC provides electricity supply solutions for eligible commercial and industrial customers. We help businesses review their energy requirements, explore supply options, complete switching requirements, and manage their transition.
Your business may qualify if it has an average monthly peak demand of 100 kW or more, based on the latest ERC contestability threshold effective June 26, 2026. To confirm your eligibility, you may check your electricity bill or request your load profile from your distribution utility. JNEC can also help review your usage, even for multiple facilities or affiliates, we can help assess if aggregation may apply.
Switching to a Retail Electricity Supplier allows businesses to explore more competitive electricity rates, better contract options, and energy solutions that fit their operations.

For NEW Contestable Customers:
